Minor alignment issues in your smile can develop with age. Sometimes they can be the result of past tooth loss, changes in gum health, or minor modifications in your mouth structure. Regardless of the cause, these minor imperfections in your appearance can leave you feeling self-conscious. Fortunately, your orthodontist, Dr. Ponce, can adjust minor imperfections in a short amount of time by fitting you for Invisalign®.
To do this, she will examine your mouth and take a few X-rays to make sure your teeth are healthy. This will also help define your alignment goals and the number of custom aligners needed to restore the alignment of your smile.
Then, she will take an impression of your teeth. This will be sent to the Invisalign® laboratory where a series of aligner trays will be made to custom match your teeth.
For the maximum effect and minimum duration of treatment, you will need to have the clear, plastic aligners in your mouth for 20 to 22 hours per day. Each set of aligners is designed to gradually stretch the periodontal ligaments that are anchoring your teeth, gradually repositioning them a little bit closer to your ideal smile.
After two weeks, you will switch to another set of aligners that are designed to bring you one step closer to your final alignment. The number of aligners needed will vary. Most people meet their alignment goals in around six to eight weeks.
You can drink normally with the aligners in your mouth, but you will still need to remove them before eating. You should never smoke or chew gum while the aligners are in your mouth as this could potentially damage the aligners. Be sure to keep the Invisalign® aligners in the case provided when you’re not wearing them.
Once your teeth have achieved their new positions, you might need to use a removable, clear, plastic retainer. This will help hold your teeth in their new alignment while the minor tension in your periodontal ligaments subsides.
