Getting new braces can be discouraging, as you try to navigate your new food restrictions. But don’t worry! We have some great suggestions for braces-friendly desserts for you.
Chocolate: While you must avoid chocolate’s close culinary friend, sticky caramel, you don’t need to worry about chocolate itself. Dark chocolate is best for mouth health, as it is lower in sugar. Learning how to properly taste chocolate is becoming more and more popular, and can be a great date night! Avoid mixed filled chocolates and bridge mix, as these contain fillings that can damage braces. For another fun adventure, try making your own chocolates with soft, braces-friendly fillings, such as mint fondant or fruit jam. Be sure to share some with your orthodontist!
Fruit: Thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar or little lemon can be a fun, crisp snack at any party. Make sure to make thin slices so you don’t damage your braces! Try different varieties, such as Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Granny Smith. Pairing fruits with cheeses is a great way to increase your calcium intake, which is fantastic for teeth. Or, for an extra-sweet treat, try chocolate-covered strawberries!
Cake and pies: A beautifully decorated cake or show-stopping, bubbling pie can be a gorgeous centerpiece at a party or dinner. Just be sure to avoid nuts and sticky dried fruit–so pecan pie and fruitcake are both out! Instead, try a mile-high lemon meringue, a vanilla gooey butter cake, or a mixed berry tart. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss extra carefully on the days you eat sugary desserts, and only indulge occasionally. Accompany all desserts with a large glass of plain water!
