Do you want a successful orthodontic experience? If so, then there are things you need to do to make that possible, like keep your appliance and oral health in tip-top shape. If you don’t, you could suffer dental issues and delay your treatment time.

So, to help you keep your smile and appliance in the best shape possible during orthodontic treatment in Tucson, Arizona, Dr. Yone Ponce and our team have three helpful tips for you.

First, make sure to keep up on oral hygiene. This is vital because if you don’t, harmful particles, like food and plaque, can get trapped in the small spaces of your appliance and teeth and can cause tooth decay, enamel stains, and even gum disease. So, make sure you brush twice a day and floss your smile after each meal and snack. For the best results possible, we also recommend rinsing your mouth with a beneficial mouthwash daily.

Second, avoid eating foods that can harm your appliance. During treatment, it’s best to avoid eating sugary, starchy, chewy, and sticky foods. The sugary and starchy foods tend to cling to the teeth and cause cavities while the chewy and sticky foods tend to break your brackets and wires.

Third, wear a mouthguard while you are active. If you don’t guard your teeth while you participate in high-contact sports and activities, there is a high chance of a hard, forceful object hitting your mouth, injuring your smile, and breaking your braces. So, if you want to avoid having broken and knocked out teeth and broken brackets, please wear a mouthguard while you play in games and participate in practice.
