Your regularly scheduled braces adjustments played an essential role in correcting the alignment of your teeth. Each of these sessions applied progressive tension to your teeth and periodontal ligaments to gradually alter the orientation of your misaligned teeth.
After the braces have been removed a retainer is often necessary to prevent relapse caused by latent tension in the periodontal ligaments. Left unaddressed the latent tension in the periodontal ligaments could cause your teeth to fall out of their ideal position.
Here at Friendly Smiles Orthodontics our orthodontist can provide you with a removable retainer to help prevent relapse complications. Your retainer will require good oral hygiene habits as well as daily care and regular cleaning. If any aspect of it is bent, damaged, or altered in some way, it could increase the amount of time you need to use the retainer.
You should always remove the retainer before eating. This will prevent food particles from getting trapped under the retainer while also protecting it from wear. When it’s not in your mouth, you should always store it in the case provided.
If needed, you can refresh the retainer by soaking it for a few minutes in an equal mixture of water and antiseptic mouthwash. You can also lightly brush away any plaque buildup with a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste.
